Pillars of Good Government
pillar
 Support and promote
a strong and responsive
local government system

Local Government Academy  is establishing Pillars of Good Government for use in evaluating the value and performance of local government services.  The process for establishing the standards engages local governments, the academic community, businesses and nonprofit organizations around the following "pillars" of good government:

Ethics
Intergovernmental Cooperation
Budget/Finance
Public Safety
Public Works and Infrastructure
Powers and Duties of Municipalities and Local Officials
Planning/Zoning & Community Development
Public Human Resource Management

Team Leaders are conducting focus groups on each of these topics to solicit your input on what good government means in each key area.  Your participation will help to create the best possible standards for use by elected & appointed officials and the public.

Pillars team
Left to right:  Susan Hockenberry, LGA; Paul Lauer, Budget/Finance, Marla Marcinko, Intergovernmental Cooperation; Bill Gamble, Public Safety; Mary Jane Kuffner Hirt, Ethics; Barbara Ciampini, Community Development; Tim Little, Powers/Duties; Jason Dailey, Public Works/Infrastructure.  Absent: Mark Mansfield, Public Human Resource Management.

If you are interested in becoming part of a Pillars Team, we welcome your insights on the policies, principles, and practices that make up good government. The process is designed to make good use of your time, including the use a wiki to facilitate group communication. Developed by LGA Intern Kate Roberts of Tufts University, this resource brings together and organizes the variety of expertise that  intersects at LGA.  (New to wiki?  try/join www.igcsuccess.org,  a related LGA wiki on intergovernmental success stories.)

Additionally, watch for opportunities for the community to comment on LGA Lyceum

Pillars of Good Government is made possible through the generous support of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.  For more information or to participate contact Susan Hockenberry, LGA Executive Director
