From the Executive Director: Building a Bright Summer: Updates in Local Government
Local Government Academy was established in 1983 with the mission to Promote Excellence in Local Government. Over the years, we have stayed focused on the goal of educating elected officials on the roles and responsibilities of local governments in Pennsylvania while increasing awareness of the rewarding careers available in the public sector. What are we doing now? We are celebrating our steadfast commitment to building municipal capacity and reaffirming Local Government Academy’s dedication to helping municipalities work better—together.
Local Government Academy’s unique workforce development initiative, the Municipal Intern Program, turns 30 this year! We are proud of our role in developing the next generation of municipal leaders and are excited to share the role that MIP played to launch the careers of so many through our MIP Alumni Spotlight.
Looking forward to the 2025 Municipal Election, Local Government Academy is preparing for the Newly Elected Officials Course. For those of you preparing to run for office, check out our website and save the dates for the most comprehensive, non-partisan training program on the job of an elected official in Pennsylvania. This course covers the legal responsibilities as well as the best practices for effective municipal administration and service delivery.
For anyone who wants our communities to thrive, we encourage you to get involved in your local government. Contact your local municipal office, attend a meeting, and stay in touch with us for opportunities to attend non-partisan, community workshops to better understand what your government officials do on a daily basis to improve the lives of residents.
