A unique and valuable resource to communities across our region
Stepping up as a regional leader in the mid-1980s, Allegheny County established Local Government Academy to be a unique and valuable resource to communities across our region. Central to our mission is to provide non-partisan, fact-based education unique to the needs of public officials and municipal staff.
So far in 2020, we have witnessed great upheaval and tremendous success, but our mission to Promote Excellence in Local Government has withstood even in these unprecedented times. So, what’s next?
First, we celebrate the successful conclusion of the 25th year of the Municipal Intern Program. Each year, as we conclude summer, we are left enthused by the energy and passion of the graduates and undergraduates who serve under this capacity-building program. The MIP Class of 2020 all shared the inspiring characteristics of perseverance and adaptability, and we learned a lot from what is the next generation of leaders. The Academy has new ideas to carry forward and what could be a new tradition: a Recognition Picnic!
Next, we thank our many partners and selfless volunteer instructors who donated their professional expertise to provide over 400 hours of instruction during our Summer Workshop Series. Government excellence comes with well-trained and capable staff supporting knowledgeable elected and appointed officials. Local Government Academy will continue offering this valuable learning opportunity with the launch of our Fall Workshop Series beginning on Tuesday, September 22, check our website for more information.
Then we issue a challenge to any community concerned about property maintenance, code enforcement, and abandoned or neglected properties to sign up for Local Government Academy’s Blight Mitigation Initiative. Funded by the Benedum Foundation, we are offering specialized training conducted by the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania and others. This valuable workforce development training is free for local government officials and staff.
Finally, we express our gratitude to our Friends, Advocates, and Board of Directors – past and present. Over the years, we have built a reputation as a reliable resource for local governments. After decades of service, Local Government Academy remains ready and willing to meet our mission thanks to your dedication and support.
Yes, we are unique as an organization, but we rely on partnerships to achieve our mission. So, what’s next? Public officials and municipal staff, we invite you to give us your feedback on our programming and your needs as a public servant. Partners, we invite you to collaborate with us to meet the needs of local government. Keep in touch with us at our website or [email protected].
