Session #4: November 19th, 2025 – Data Governance – CLE Credits

      1. In 2024, MetroLab Network hosted a national task force to consider policy needs as generative AI became more ubiquitous. When MetroLab asked the 40+ participating local governments what is preventing you from using AI today, the number one answer was a lack in established data governance policies. Using the MetroLab Network’s “Model Data Governance Policy and Practice Guide for Cities and Counties” as a reference point, this session will take a deep dive and 101 into data governance, balancing the duty of transparency with the duty to protect individual privacy. In addition, several key legal issues and challenges will be highlighted, with considerations for city and county attorneys in shaping, implementing, and monitoring compliance with related rules and policies, taking into account variations among municipalities in existing data governance systems and resources.
