From the Executive Director: Carving a Path for Excellence in Local Government

As the days grow shorter and a chill settles in the air, Local Government Academy is preparing a fall season full of learning opportunities for local leaders.

First, save the date: the 2025–2026 Newly Elected Officials Course (NEOC) launches this winter. Registration will open on November 4th, 2025, and this year’s program will once again provide newly elected and appointed officials with the essential knowledge and tools they need to govern effectively. It’s the perfect way to start a new term with confidence and preparation.

This fall also brings a timely new learning series. Beginning October 29th, join us for a four-part AI and Local Government Webinar Series, presented in partnership with Pitt Cyber, MetroLab, and the Federation of American Scientists. Running Wednesdays at noon through November 19th, the series will cover generative AI basics, procurement, leading use cases, and data governance. These sessions are designed to help local leaders understand both the opportunities and risks of AI in government and to develop strategies for responsible use.

From preparing new officials for the challenges ahead to exploring emerging technologies, Local Government Academy’s programs this season are designed to equip leaders with knowledge that lasts long after the jack-o’-lanterns fade.
