From the Executive Director: Restoring faith in government.

Restoring faith in government. Does that seem like a far-fetched idea? Not when you meet the next generation of leaders!

I believe we are facing a ground swell of interest to change the perception of government as a political construct to one that reinforces the concept of a public servant working for the common good. This passion is underscored by up-and-coming graduates seeking to learn more about career opportunities in local government.

Every year in March, as the Municipal Intern Program kicks off, soon-to-be graduates who want real world experience (and paid summer internships) know to check out our website and prepare for the annual Municipal Intern Fair. This year will be a virtual affair in partnership with the G2U PGH Spring 2021 Government Virtual Career + Internship Fair, on March 18th from 1 – 4 p.m. If you know a student looking for a paid summer internship, please encourage them to apply for the Municipal Intern Program using the following link: http://www.localgovernmentacademy.org/mip/students/

As we enter March, the Academy is launching new programs to support the professional development of our municipal leaders. Over the next year, we will delve into issues related to Blight, Public Sector Human Resource and Finance, and Sustainable Community Development. For example, this Thursday, March 4, we are hosting 2021 Covid-19 Employment Strategies, Vaccinations and Leave, featuring attorneys Joshua Hausman and Hobie Webster from Campbell Durrant, P.C., who will provide a deeper dive into management considerations unique to public sector employers.

It is not unusual for municipal officials to have questions related to public administration, and we remain committed to delivering affordable and accessible non-partisan education designed specifically to address matters related to local governments. Please contact me with suggestions for new training and educational programs. We are always interested in hearing your thoughts to promote the strong and responsive local government systems necessary for healthy and vibrant communities.
