Leaving a Legacy of Excellence in Local Government

Mike and Kelly Lynch

Leaving a rich legacy of community service, Local Government Academy mourns the passing of Michael P. Lynch. Mr. Lynch, a true renaissance man, was a person of many accomplishments, including serving three terms as Mayor of Monroeville and receiving Monroeville’s 1989 Citizen of the Year award. He was also intimately involved with the creation of Local Government Academy, serving on the committee charged with establishing an educational organization for local governments, and then serving as the first Board Chair.

His belief in the importance of education for local elected officials and municipal staff set the tone for Local Government Academy. Under his leadership, the Academy developed a reputation for providing quality training and educational programs designed specifically for local elected officials and staff. His last communication with us followed our December 2019 newsletter as he congratulated the Academy on a successful year, emphasizing his belief that “Local Government Academy is a unique local government resource and partner in support of serving the needs of our communities.”

We are humbled and proud to honor his legacy through the Michael P. Lynch Scholarship Fund, which provides free or low-cost education for municipalities regardless of their ability to pay. On behalf of Local Government Academy, we offer heartfelt condolences to the family and many friends of Michael Lynch. Mr. Lynch dedicated his life to bettering the lives of others, and Local Government Academy remains steadfast in our efforts to achieve his vision of professionally led communities.
